3-D digital survey and geological investigation of the underground galleries of the Nymphs’ and Pan’s quarries
The study concerns all the galleries of the Nymphs’ and Pan’s quarries and covered the following subjects:
- Aerial survey of the wider area
- Three-dimensional digital survey of all the underground galleries of Nymphs’ and Pan’s quarries
- Geological engineering interpretation
- Risk assessment
- Presentation – communication of results
The study highlighted the existence of a large number of faults mainly in the southern and intermediate gallery of Nymphs (roof collapse, wedge sliding, column breakage). It also carried out a preliminary assessment of the risk of each fault in all galleries and presented the approach of the proposed protection measures.
The results of the study were presented at an event co-organised by the AMKE (Ancient Quarries Non-profit Organisation) and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades on 27.11.2022, with visualisation based on 3D models and interactive virtual reality application.
The AMKE contributed to the preparation of the study (organisation and costs of a preparatory visit and briefing of experts) and supported the study team in situ at all stages.
