Monitoring system of the stability of part of Nymphs’ Quarry

Implementation of part of the study on restoring the stability of Nymphs’ Quarry, involving the installation and operation of an Instrumental Monitoring System (IMS) at the mouth and first section of the southern gallery of the Quarry.

The implementation of the IMS aims to:

  • Document the geostatic condition of the carved rocks.
  • Safe and long-term monitoring of any micro-movements, convergences, deformations and cracks in the dome and the sides of the gallery.
  • Monitoring of dynamic movements within the gallery (earthquakes and/or vibrations).
  • Monitoring of climatic parameters inside the gallery (humidity, temperature, etc.).
  • Preparing the area for future protection measures.
  • Ensuring safe conditions for visits to the monument in the future.

Example Monitoring instrument

The IMS includes the installation of special instruments, a wireless telemetry system, a data evaluation system and training for those responsible for monitoring the IMS in the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades.
