Structural stabilisation works to the historic “winch stations” of the Nymphs’ Quarry
The archaeological site of the Ancient Quarries in Marathi includes many industrial buildings from the period of quarrying in the 19th century. Two of these historic buildings are located at the entrances to the Nymphs’ Quarry and are known as “winch stations”. Both buildings are currently in a state of serious disrepair, and rescue work is necessary.
Following the acquisition of possession and use rights over the Nymphs’ siteby AMKE (Ancient Quarries Non-profit Organisation) and with the consent of the Department of Modern Monuments of the Ministry of Culture, AMKE is proceeding with the relevant study and structural stabilisation work on the two “winch stations”.
The aim of the intervention is to preserve this monument, with a view to the possibility of its future use as an organised rest and information station for visitors to the archaeological site.
