The Protection and Enhancement Plan of the Ancient Quarries of Paros
The Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Paros and the Paros Regional Unit (region of South Aegean), in collaboration with the non-profit organisation “Paros Ancient Marble Quarries Park AMKE“, supported by cultural and professional organisations of the island, are developing a long-term plan aiming to promote the area, where in antiquity the quarries of the famous Parian marble were developed.
The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades coordinates and promotes the studies and projects necessary for the documentation and the provision of adequate stability of the underground quarries, so that they can gradually open to visitors, offering them the special experience of entering the ancient galleries, from which the famous Parian marble was extracted.
At the same time, the Municipality of Paros and the AMKE collaborate on the creation of the Paros Marble Quarries Park, a space offering a wide range of activities, from the creation of a Visitor Center presenting the history of the area through time, the methods of quarrying and processing the marble in antiquity and an exhibition of copies of the masterpieces made of Parian marble, as well as the creation of cultural routes and the organization of artistic and cultural events.
The reuse/utilization of some of the 19th-century industrial buildings to host cultural activities is one of the main objectives of the Park.
