The non-profit organisation (AMKE) “Park of Ancient Marble Quarries of Paros” has started a series of actions for the local community of Paros to get to know better the cultural heritage of the ancient marble quarries of the island and to be able to contribute to its protection and promotion.
In this context, three presentations were made at Parikia Gymnasium on 10/5/2023 and two at Naoussa Gymnasium on 18/5/2013. The archaeologist-guide Mrs. Georgia Papadopoulou presented the history and importance of the underground quarries of the famous Parian marble (lychnites) in Marathi. Spyros Mitrogiannis, Haris Martinos and Yorgos Vlandas from the AMKE Board of Directors explained the initiative of the local associations, through AMKE, to create an archaeological and cultural park in the archaeological area of the quarries in Marathi.
This pilot action was crowned with success. The Director of Parikia Gymnasium, Yannis Drosos, in his social media post, said:
“The ancient quarries in Marathi of Paros must be declared a World Heritage Site.” This is how ended the important presentation of the tour guide, Ms Georgia Papadopoulos and Mr Spyros Mitrogiannis on the importance of this site, from the bowels of which came the famous Parian Marble.
The AMKE, together with the authorities of the island’s schools, will plan a complete programme of activities for the new school year 2023-24.
